Louie Niederhammer and his wife Teri have experienced cancer care during COVID-19 firsthand. He is being treated for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Traveling from Lenoir, N.C., for multiple surgery, radiation and chemotherapy appointments highlighted the need for patient aid, especially for those patients from rural N.C. counties.
Wanting to positively impact cancer patients and their families, the Niederhammers made an endowed gift to establish the Edelweiss Fund, named to honor Louie’s heritage and cancer journey. The fund will offer direct financial assistance to brain tumor patients in need from western N.C. and beyond. They then elected to make a companion gift to the fund through their estate.
“The care that Louie received inspired us to want to give back,” Teri said. “It’s exciting to know that the Edelweiss Fund will support brain tumor patients long into the future and that others can also contribute to the cause. We were happy to start the fund and hope that it will inspire others to also get involved.”
