New law: The age limit to begin Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) from IRA plans has been increased from 70 ½ to age 72. The law only impacts those born July 1, 1949, or later. This does not impact people who turned 70 ½ prior to January 1, 2020. These indivduals will continue to take RMDs.
THE SECURE ACT CHANGED RMD AGE REQUIREMENT, BUT NOT THE QCD AGE REQUIREMENT.
Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): The SECURE Act did not change the age at which an individual can make QCDs from an IRA, which remains at age 70 ½. Gifts of up to $100,000 annually from an IRA to a qualified non-profit counts toward Required Minimum Distributions and the tax benefit does not depend on itemizing your deductions.
